Nitrate Vulnerable Zone rules
Nitrate Vulnerable Zones are tobe extended to cover 70% of English farmland.
Water quality is the focus and tighter rules are expected and may affect existing areas as well as newly designated sites.
Storage facilities for slurry etc will have to be upgraded to hold 22 weeeks worth of manure. This will result in higher investment in storage facilities and will once again hit dairy farmers.Other actions will also be required.
Be aware that the Environment Agency will take action on those exceeding the prescribed limits.Visit nvz.adasis.co.uk/maps to view the areas now included.
Changes to the action programme come into force on 1st Jan 2009
Consultation concludes 13th Nov 2008. For more information contact DEFRA or David Bussey LLP
